A Nebraska Coalition
Our athletes aren't a betting line
Online sports gambling would put a casino in every Nebraskan's pocket — and put our athletes, our kids, and our families on the wrong end of the wager.
What's At Stake
Sports Are Part Of Who We Are
In Nebraska, sports aren't entertainment we buy. They're how we raise our kids, how our towns gather on Friday nights, and how a state of two million people fills a stadium every fall Saturday.
Legalizing online sports gambling changes what a game means. It turns a player into a line, a play into a payout, and a fan into a customer. It moves money out of Nebraska kitchen tables and into out-of-state sportsbooks, and it hands every 14-year-old with a phone a front-row seat to it.
Nebraskans have always chosen our athletes over the sportsbooks. We should choose them again.
The Risks
What Online Sports Betting Brings
Five things Nebraskans should know before anyone puts a sportsbook on every phone in the state.
-
Threats Against Athletes
Angry bettors routinely target college athletes with harassment and threats. The NCAA says it is one of the most common forms of abuse athletes receive.
-
Targeting Young People
More than one-third of boys ages 12 to 17 have gambled online. Sixty percent regularly see online gambling ads on YouTube and social media.
-
Broken Tax Promises
Casinos promised major property tax relief. Five years later, Nebraskans have seen little relief, and many families are still paying more.
-
Financial Aid Gambled Away
Twenty percent of college students have used student loans to gamble.
-
A Casino In Every Pocket
Online sports betting would turn every phone, laptop, and tablet into a gambling device — available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Nebraskans support, embrace, and protect our athletes. Legalizing online sports gambling does none of those things.

Nebraska Leaders Are Speaking Up
As State Auditor, I feel an obligation to inform the citizens you're being scammed on false promises of property tax relief. Betting dollars from Nebraska will go to New York and Boston, and Nebraskans will be left with pennies.

Sports unite us because they reflect our values: hard work, teamwork, honesty, and fair competition. Online sports betting threatens these values. It turns every phone into a casino, every play into a wager, and every athlete into a potential target.

Being a Husker is an honor unlike any other. Every time we put on the scarlet and cream, we give it all for our team and our fans.
Out-of-state gambling conglomerates are seeking to make a profit off of fans and players. This will undermine the integrity of college athletics by bringing unrestricted online sports gambling and relentless advertising for online sports betting to Nebraska. These groups do not care about our athletes, our traditions, or Nebraska families. They see our state as another market and every phone as another casino.
As Huskers, we understand the pressure that comes with high-level competition. Today’s student-athletes should be able to compete without worrying that every play, mistake, or outcome could affect someone’s financial well-being. No student-athlete should face harassment or threats because gamblers lost money on a game, a play, or a parlay. Unfortunately, these online gambling companies are known for relentless advertising and in-app ploys to keep gamblers betting and losing.
Game manipulation, bribery, extortion, and threats against athletes, officials, and staff are dangers to the sports world. In one case highlighted by the FBI, a bettor sent threatening messages to college and professional athletes and their families when the athletes’ performances did not align with his wagers. Those messages included racial slurs and graphic threats to kill or harm the athletes and their loved ones.
The FBI also warns that criminal actors attempt to manipulate games by exploiting athletes facing financial difficulties, substance abuse, or gambling problems. When fans begin questioning whether the outcome of a game is determined by honest competition, the integrity of the entire sport is at risk. Husker athletics is about teamwork, discipline, competition, and pride in our state. We cannot allow it to be used as a vehicle to enrich out-of-state gambling interests at the expense of Nebraska families.
On November 3, 2026, Nebraska voters will decide whether to amend our state constitution to open the door to online sports gambling. We urge our fellow Nebraskans to protect student-athletes, protect families, and preserve the integrity of college athletics by voting NO.

Nebraska Doesn't Need A Casino In Every Pocket
Our games belong to the players, the students, and the towns that show up for them — not to a sportsbook taking a cut of every snap.
